300. Rare Watercolor portrait attributed to Thomas
Sully of Eliza Falconett Middleton, was the wife of
Izard Middleton and the granddaughter-in-law of
Arthur Middleton, signer of the Declaration of
Independence, the family home being “Middleton
Place” outside of Charleston, South Carolina. The
attribution comes from a later copy of a letter
(that will accompany the painting when sold) dated
1816 letter to Samuel Craig of Baltimore from a Mr.
DeKantzen (who uses the pen name Kit Kat). DeKantzen
identifies the subject of this watercolor as “Mrs.
Middleton of South Carolina” and notes the artist as
Thomas Sully. The letter continues on in noting how
striking Kit Kat found the portrait. 9”x7.5”
