325. Sully, Thomas [American 1783-1872] oil on
canvas portrait of a pretty young woman wearing a
red dress with a lace trimmed bodice, signed front
and verso “T.S.”. Although the sitter is unknown,
family history relates that this is one of the
daughters of the painter Thomas Sully. The link
between the Sully and Biddle families is well
documented through extensive correspondence as well
as the numerous family portraits executed by Sully
for the Biddles. The 1921 catalog of Sully’s work
lists several un-located portraits of Sully’s
daughters of which any one could be the subject of
this painting. Cleaned, revarnished, relined,
several repairs under BL, restretched w/original
keys note: initials verso are on top of lining and
so were added to copy the originals underneath by
the conservator. 20.75”x17”

Sold for $7,000 |
